This Meritage has a beautiful bright medium ruby colour with a lighter ruby hue. This wine has a seductive nose of ripe plums and brambleberry lifting out of the glass. Cedar, new leather, vanilla and baking spices follow through. Those fruit characteristics are mirrored on the palate with black raspberry, dates, cocoa, vanilla, and baking spices up front. This wine is a concentrated medium bodied blend with a textured mid palate. There are ripe tannins and a fresh balanced acidity to provide structure and focus all the way through to a medium long finish. This wine will continue to develop and integrate further, softening the tannins with time in the cellar.
This Meritage is comprised of 75% Merlot (from a vineyard in Niagara-On-The-Lake) and 25% Cabernet Franc (from our Estate vineyard). The grapes were harvested separately at optimum ripeness, crushed and destemmed into tank for fermentation. The wine was macerated for 26 days with pump overs, then pressed off to tank for settling before being transferred to barrel for aging. The wine was aged for 18 months, with 25% in new French oak and 75%in neutral oak barrels. Malo Lactic fermentation occurred early on. Following blending, the wine was transferred out of barrel, filtered and bottled.
