Formed in 1999, the Fergie Jenkins Foundation has become one of the most wide-reaching registered charities in North America. What began as a meeting of the minds in 1997 between Canada’s only member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Carl Kovacs, the Foundation first established its roots by running a golf tournament in support of theCanadian Red Cross.
Supporting more than 500 charities in Canada and the United States, the Foundation raises money for these organizations under the mandate of “Serving Humanitarian Need Through the Love of Sport.'
From the start of 2016, the winter and spring brought below normal precipitation. This persisted throughout spring and summer months defining the growing season with drought conditions. Young vines were hand watered almost daily to ensure their survival. Luckily the mature vines are deep-rooted and were able to get by with the soil moisture located deeper in the soil horizon. Hot and dry conditions persisted late into the growing season when sporadic rainfall events began to appear, keeping the drought concerns at bay. When under stress, the vines focus energy on the fruit and with the help of later season rain, an already stellar looking crop sized up well and delivered superb quality. Harvests were ripe, clean and are promising to deliver cool-climate wines with power and finesse from a ‘not-so-cool’ vintage.
Bright purple to ruby in colour. The wine gives aromas of chocolate, smoked meats, preserved cherries and wild flowers. The wine is medium bodied on the palate with a soft yet crisp mouthfeel. Flavours of strawberry and dark chocolate are present with hints of coffee and fresh tobacco. A medium+ finish.
A blend of 70% Baco Noir and 30% Cabernet Franc. Grapes were harvested and destemmed into stainless steel tanks. Varietals were fermented separately and pressed off of skins when dryness was achieved. Wines underwent malolactic fermentation and ageing in a mix of French and American oak.
